Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian road deaths are a significant concern in the Northern Territory (NT). Over the past ten years, pedestrians have accounted for an average of 20.1% of road fatalities.

In 1987, Steven Maymuru, from Yirrkala near Nhulunbuy—was seriously injured as a pedestrian. At 28, he sustained spinal injuries that resulted in quadriplegia.

For 38 years, Steven has been supported by the MAC Scheme ensuring he gets the necessary medical care and living support achieve  He lives in Darwin in an assisted living home with 24-hour care in Darwin’s northern suburbs.

Before the accident, Steven was a cultural dancer who performed both interstate and internationally, including in Paris. His inability to dance and participate in family and cultural activities in Yirrkala is what he misses the most.

Steven wanted to share his story to raise awareness about the risks associated with walking on roads, especially after drinking.

Steven tells his story with great vulnerability, honesty, and sensitivity.  We thank Steven for his courage to share his story and leadership in road trauma prevention.
