Attending independent medical assessments

MAC may request you to attend an independent medical examination (IME), where a specialist will review your injury and provide an independent report.

What is an independent medical examination?

An independent medical examination provides MAC with an independent opinion regarding your injury and treatment to assist with decisions about your rehabilitation, recovery, work capacity and your entitlements to MAC Benefits.

An independent medical examiner is a specialist with qualifications relevant to your injury.  They do not replace your treating doctor and cannot treat you as a patient.

They review your injury and provide an independent report.

From time to time, MAC may ask you to attend Independent Medical Examination.

When attending the appointment, please take with you any medical reports, imaging and test results you have as this will help with the assessment

Who pays for the assessment?

MAC will pay for the specialist appointment and reasonable costs associated with your attendance such as travel.

If you wish to claim travel costs, please talk to your MAC case manager before attending to confirm what will be covered by MAC.

To be reimbursed for interstate travel costs and meals, please keep all receipts and send them to MAC Case manager as soon as you return.

Arranging the independent medical examination appointment

Your MAC case manager will co-ordinate the appointment on a date and time that is convenient and will confirm the arrangements with both you and the specialist.

If you cannot attend the appointment

Medical examinations often have an expensive cancellation fee for cancellation at short notice or for non-attendance.

If you cannot attend the appointments, please contact TIO MAC Case manager as soon as possible and at least 5 working days before your appointment.

Please call TIO MAC on 1300 493 506 if you are unable to attend the appointment.

If you fail to attend an appointment or cancel at short notice you may be liable for fee.

Telehealth appointments

Telehealth appointments may be available in some circumstances, for medical specialist assessments through video-conferencing facilities, reducing the need to travel.

If this option is available TIO MAC Case manager will discuss this option with you.
